Another Program for Wounded Warriors

Josh Galle at Collinswood About an hour east of Atlanta, a United Methodist church camp sponsors family retreats for disabled veterans.

The retreat was the result of a partnership between veterans and officials at Collinswood Camp of Aldersgate Homes, who were searching for ways to assist soldiers returning home from service, particularly those among the more than 30,000 wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.... Read more here

Wounded Warriors Compete in Wheelchair Games

Wheelchair Athlete Steve McGuire After hearing a lot about poor treatment for wounded warriors, it’s encouraging to learn about the VA’s Wheelchair Games for combat wounded warriors.

Army Staff Sgt. John Bennett, was shot by a sniper in Iraq in February 2005. Three years ago, just 11 months after leaving the hospital, Bennett attended his first National Veterans Wheelchair Games. By the time the competition had finished, he’d earned two gold medals, in basketball and the 100-meter wheelchair race, as well as a bronze in bowling.... Read more here

The Chaplains’ Closet and Ways to Support our Troops

chaplains' closet at Landstuhl AFBThe Chaplains’ Closet at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, with shelves stretching to the ceiling, is officially called the Wounded Warrior Ministry Center.  The “closet” is really the size of an average convenience store, and is filled with donations that pour in every week.  The clothing, shoes and toiletries are destined for the wounded warriors who pass through Landstuhl, most coming from Iraq or Afghanistan.  The hospital reports that over 54,000 wounded warriors have been cared for at Landstuhl since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom in October 2001....
