i know that money is an immediate need but the other thing that is crucial right now is to DONATE BLOOD; please get troops together and give blood, we are already at a crucial need in this country and we will utilize our own blood banks for the people of Haiti and gladly. But without more donations here in the US our blood banks will become at risk.

Good Morning! I just saw your entry while I was calling the military one source information line, and I felt compelled to comment. I have known several soldiers who were suffering from mental health issues when returning home from combat. As a family member I watched many of them try and get treatment at the posts medical facilities only to be turned away or mistreated. By mistreated, one individual was told he could not be diagnosed as having PTSD by a psychiatrist because "they" wouldn't allow that at his facility even though the doctor said that is what it was but could only put a dx of anxiety not-otherwise specified. Another soldier I know was harrassed by his unit because he sought treatment...the Rear-D commander even calling his doctor directly to ask inappropriate questions about his treatment. Since you asked, I feel like soldiers are not comfortable seeking treatment, they are looked down upon when the do, and doctors' hands are being tied and therefore unable to render proper treatment. This is so sad and disappointing to me not only as a veteran myself but as the spouse of a soldier and a friend to many more who I believe will never be treated appropriately for the amazing services they have rendered to this country. With sadness in my heart, Kateri

I agree with this story. Children really need to feel that special love and support from their Dad. I have noticed that it is very challenging for some of our "A" personallity dads to realize the importance of this conection. They feel as long as they are working and supporting the family financially that the wife or mother of the child shouldn't have anything to complain about.

We are fortunate with technology available at my location. I left my husband, 15, 12, 5, and 2 1/2 year old children at home. I can call DSN through my home station morale line. My dad lives near an Army post, so I could call him through their DSN line as well. We Skype including video (when it works---sometimes we resort to just the IM portion in lieu of video). I even paid $3/month to be able to call unlimited lan lines/cell phones via Skype. That way if my family was out and about we could still chat at any time...well worth the investment. I have teenagers, so one bit of wisdom I picked up from my Wing commander was meet them where they are. I would go through AIM (AOL Instant Messager) to IM them instead of calling. Teens love to text and may tell you more via text than they would over the phone or through Skype video cam. Plus it makes them feel like they have a private conversation with mom. I would take turns calling the kids instead of home. Often I would then follow-up with a home call to chat with the others. We also sent letters, post-cards, care packages, and of course emails.

One bit of advice, install programs before you leave home. Deployed connections, band width etc is often much slower. It helped that I had AIM and Skype already installed. My friends struggled getting past this obstacle. Heck, even try it out before you deploy. I went to the patio and "practiced" with my teen who was in the house!!!

Best of luck to all deployed members and their families. Family support and well-being definitely makes for a smoother deployment!

I would tell them it is a day to take a step back and look at all the wonderful things we do have in our lives.
Even if it is something that seems small and insignificant, when you step back and truely look at our blessings we are filled everyday with them. It may be your child giving you a hug and telling you how much they love you, to the fact that you have a roof over your head even if it is just for that day. For me, the fact that I have family and friends that let me cry on their shoulders is a huge blessing but really, every day that I get to get an IM from my husband or get to hear his voice and see his face on webcam is Thanksgiving day for me.
