Suicide.
A word filled with pain and fear. Sadly, it is a word that is in the news this year, as the suicide rate among U.S. Army soldiers continues to rise towards record levels for the second year in a row.
Today, CNN reports, “Fort Hood, Texas Base commander LTG Rick Lynch identified one major stress problem there: Soldiers were working long hours and not spending time with their families between deployments.”
Reports from the base say that Lynch began to make these changes after a blunt conversation with one Army wife about priorities. LTG Lynch made “focus on the family” a key part of the base environment. Now, every soldier on a day schedule leaves work in time to be home for dinner by 6 p.m. On Thursdays, many are told to leave by 3 p.m. so they can spend the afternoon with their family. No one works weekends without the general’s approval.
And yet, this is still not enough, as the statistics show.
